This boulder is the first in a series commissioned by RISE Rockaway as part of their "hero walk," which celebrates local heros. On the rock is Barbara Hillary, the first Black woman to reach the North Pole. She is carved with her arms above her head celebrating her accomplishments. In this moment, she took her gloves off despite being warned of frost bite because the excitment forced her hand. Around her on the rock are classic figures from the North Pole: A penguin and some Polar Bears. The dates of her exhibition are carved into her skis.
