The boulder featured in Rockaway was sourced and moved by RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) who then sponsored Kevin to create a petroglyph carving for the community. Because this petroglyph is much more public than a lot of Kevin’s other pieces, it was important that the audience was completely accounted for. Beginning with the wildlife native to the area, Kevin carved some creatures seen everyday in the Rockaways, although they are sometimes overlooked. Animals like horseshoe crabs and an array of birds including an oystercatcher, piping plover, barn swallow, sparrow, a mourning dove and a laughing gull with a pretzel in its mouth can be witnessed all over the boulder. An ecosystem which has learned to make use of its popular environment. He also drew inspiration from other, man-made everyday objects that are seen repetitively in the Rockaways, including the planes flying overhead from JFK and a basketball. This petroglyph is unique in its display of the intermingling caused by the busy activity from both man and wildlife happening not only in the Rockaways but in New York in general.

Note: RISE commissioned the four horseshoe crabs after winning a competition for Art Under the Elevated, all the other petroglyphs sprouted from the community and wildlife and luckily RISE supported the piece growing into something larger than just the crabs.

Note: Horseshoe Crabs are an incredibly old species that has managed to survive for milenia. Their blood is copper based, so they are used to conduct medical research. They are an anomaly.
